SPLAS Film Club 2026

The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, cordially invites you to the new edition of the SPLAS Film Club 2026, a film series that celebrates the richness and diversity of Spanish-language cinema. The programme will run from 4 February to 18 March 2026 and will feature a carefully curated selection of feature films from different countries across the Spanish-speaking world. This initiative aims to bring audiences closer to the diverse cultural, social, and historical realities of Spanish-speaking societies. The selected films span different genres, periods, and narrative styles, offering a broad and nuanced overview of contemporary Latin American and Spanish identities. Each screening will be followed by an informal discussion open to students, academic staff, and the general public. These sessions provide a unique opportunity to share impressions, discuss relevant themes, and encourage intercultural dialogue in a relaxed and welcoming environment. The SPLAS Film Club has established itself as a key space in Leeds’ cultural life, promoting critical thinking, collective reflection, and an appreciation of cinema as a tool for global understanding. The films will be shown in their original Spanish version with English subtitles, making them accessible both to Spanish speakers and to those studying the language or interested in Hispanic cultures. This year’s films are: Argentina, 1985 (2022, Argentina) – Based on true events, it recounts the historic trial of those responsible for the military dictatorship. Abel (2010, Mexico) – A moving story about childhood, absence, and family bonds. All screenings will take place on the University of Leeds campus. Admission is free and no prior registration is required. We look forward to welcoming you to share this cinematic journey through the Spanish-speaking world!
