Abel, 2010
The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, is proud to present a special screening of the film Abel (2010), directed by Diego Luna, as part of the SPLAS Film Club 2026 series. Abel tells the story of a nine-year-old boy whose silence and difficult behaviour lead to his admission to a mental health facility. His single mother persuades the doctor to allow him to spend a week at home, hoping that reconnecting with his brother and sister will help him heal. In the absence of a father figure, Abel unexpectedly assumes a paternal role, bringing the family together. This moving film explores themes such as childhood trauma, family bonds and emotional resilience with warmth and sensitivity.
