Marking ten years since his death, we celebrate the poetry of Seamus Heaney with poet-translator Jordi Doce and Marie Heaney. We will enjoy readings of some of his poems in English and in translation, and discover his connections with Spain and Spanish literature.
By way of introduction, Jordi Doce will speak to us of Seamus Heaney’s connections with Spanish poetry and literature and tell us of his trips to Spain, how he discovered Goya in the Prado Museum and translated Saint John of the Cross.
We will then have readings of some of Jordi Doce’s poems that are most influenced by or most closely related to the Nobel laureate’s poetry, ending with readings in two voices: Marie Heaney will read Seamus’s Spanish-themed poems, and Jordi Doce will read his own translations into Spanish.
Biographies
Jordi Doce is a Spanish writer, publisher and translator. He has published both poetry and prose, and his poetry collections include Nothing is Lost. Selected Poems, We Were Not There and Master of Distances, all published in English translation by Shearsman Books. He has translated the poetry of William Blake, Anne Carson, T.S. Eliot, Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath and W.B. Yeats.
Marie Heaney is a Northern Irish author, editor and journalist from Tyronne. She’s the author of Over Nine Waves and The Names Upon the Harp. As an editor, she has produced several anthologies, among other, All Through the Night: Night Poems and Lullabies, nominated for and Irish Book Award in 2016.
