Join us for the presentation of the exhibition catalog Aquel Amplex, taking place at the Instituto Cervantes on Saturday, May 23. The event will include a reception and a conversation with Venezuelan artist Cassandra Mayela Allen, together with several of the catalog’s contributors, celebrating the first institutional presentation of her work in New York.

The catalog —designed by Isabel Urbina— expands on the central themes of the exhibition, situating Mayela Allen’s collaborative practice in dialogue with modernist and informalist movements from Latin America, and connecting it to mid‑20th‑century artistic experimentation shaped by its social and political contexts. The publication features texts by Fabiola R. Delgado, Carlos Nuñez, Alexander Chaparro, and Jesús Torrivilla, who explore the sociohistorical landscape of Venezuelan art, the tactile and symbolic dimensions of the materials employed by the artist, the centrality of the embrace in her practice, and a direct conversation with Mayela Allen.

This gathering aims to create a space for dialogue and celebration around the ideas that shaped Aquel Amplex, strengthening the bonds between the community, the project’s collaborators, and the artist. It will be an opportunity to contextualize the exhibition, broaden its critical reach, and highlight the institutional role of the Instituto Cervantes in this first publication dedicated to the work of Mayela Allen.
