Mourvèdre is today one of the most fashionable grapes in the world, delivering world-class wines as well as great values. It is one of the most important grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the main variety in Bandol and, as Mataro, produces distinctive wines in California and Australia. However, this grape is indigenous to Spain, where it is called Monastrell. It is extensively planted in Jumilla and the surrounding areas, where is covers more land than in the rest of the world combined. There, frequently growing in old pre-phylloxera style ungrafted vines, it thrives and reaches world-class heights. In this tasting we will survey the different styles of Monastrell-Mourvèdre-Mataro wines made in Spain and all over the world, as well as assess their aging potential.
