Ocuppied Spaces: Dublin-New York Connections
A round table that will try to establish a conversation between two authors and art professionals who have intervened in the cities of Dublin and New York with their artistic projects, as part of the international programme Occupied Spaces. The artists María del Buey (The Zone, Instituto Cervantes Dublin) and Eva Davidova (Global Mode> Omnivores, Instituto Cervantes New York), will also talk with the Irish curator Helen Carey and the cultural producer Asher Remy-Toledo.
Occupied Spaces programme aims to spark multi-faceted collaborations, linking Spanish-speaking artists with contexts, cultural agents and the places where the Instituto Cervantes centres are located. The idea is to bring artistic practice and its makers closer to the citizens of the world.
Helen Carey is a visual arts curator from Ireland. Director of the iconic FireStation Artists Studios in Dublín, she was appointed one the six new Members to the Culture Ireland Expert Advisory Committee. Carey was the inaugural Director of the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris; Director of Galway Arts Centre (Ireland) and director of the Limerick City Gallery of Art. She has worked with artists who are well known nationally and internationally, and has also worked with many emerging artists.
Eva Davidova is a multidisciplinary artist with focus on new media, information, and their socio-political implications. She has exhibited at the Bronx Museum, the Everson Museum, the Albright Knox Museum, MACBA Barcelona, CAAC Sevilla, Instituto Cervantes, La Regenta, ISSUE Project Room, and numerous private galleries in Europe and the US. Global Mode > Omnivores is her installation presented at the Instituto Cervantes, Nueva York, part of the Occupied Spaces Programme.
María del Buey is a Spanish artist based in Dublin since 2018, where she completed her master studies. Her art practice engages the spatial matter along with experimentation with sounds and words to reflect on possible and alternative spaces of existence and experience. Her practice is inspired by the work of Henri Lefebvre, Brandon LaBelle and Hypatia Vourloumis, among others. The Zone is her multimedia installation presented at the Instituto Cervantes, Dublín, as part of the Occupied Spaces Programme.
Asher Remy-Toledo is a New York based (b. Colombia) cultural producer with over two decades of experience in the field. He is the co-founder and current director of Hyphen Hub, a New York based organization working at the intersection of art and creative technology that creates live events, salons, exhibitions with a focus on the new frontiers of technology. Asher was the guest curator at the 2018, 2019 and 2020 International Festival of the Image (http://festivaldelaimagen.com/) in Manizales, Colombia, a new media festival that brings together practitioners, electronic music, exhibitions and scholars to the longest running festival of new media in Latin America.
