Aljamía is an initiative of the Cervantes Institute that brings together under one name the activities of presenting works by Spanish-speaking authors translated into other languages, especially in the United States. Its purpose is to give greater visibility to the networking already carried out by the Institute's centers in collaboration with local publishers.
The name Aljamía comes from Arabic and was used to refer to Spanish written in Arabic characters during the time of Don Quixote. It evokes linguistic and cultural fusion and symbolizes the dialogue between languages that inspires this program.
Among the highlights of this fall's activities is the presentation of the English translation of Clavícula by Marta Sanz, along with other titles that bring Spanish literature to new audiences.
