Quixotic echoes in Indian culture (The representation of Don Quixote in artistic productions) El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha

The masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes arrived almost two centuries ago to the Indian subcontinent. From the beginning, artists, writers and professors received the Cervantine novel with great enthusiasm. The truth is that it immediately enjoyed great fame and recognition. There are several reasons for this sudden success, but the fundamental one is that some vernacular languages of India already had in their tradition sagas and odysseys of great heroes and defenders of the oppressed. There was also a rich tradition of popular ballads and hagiographies dedicated to praising worthy and courageous men. This fortunate identification with the Knight of the sorrowful face gave rise to other arts, such as film or painting, recreate in their own way the work of Cervantes, giving surprising results.
