The “Spanish Transition” is the term associated with that political and social period when the Spanish society started opening up during the dictatorship of General Franco, towards a process of democratisation, during the mid eighties. Cinema has had an essential role to play in the process. Its central role is still very much alive in the hearts of many Spanish citizens till this day. The diversity of its formats, the boldness of its contents, the search for expression and the formulation of new ideas with which a new nation was created, makes the cinema of this era one of the richest and most thought provoking in the history of Spanish culture.
