José Martí: The eye of the canary

José Martí: The eye of the canary desconocido

José Martí: the eye of the canary is a 2010 Cuban dramatic film with historical and biographical themes, written and directed by Fernando Pérez Valdés. It is inspired by the childhood and adolescence of José Martí, a prominent Cuban politician, thinker, writer and independence activist from the second half of the 19th century, in the period of his life that spans from 9 to 17 years of age.

José Martí: the eye of the canary seeks to take the viewer into the daily complexity that forged the personality and character of José Martí during his childhood and adolescence, specifically in the period of his life that extends from the ages of 9 to 17 years of age, when he is imprisoned by the Spanish government in Cuba and sentenced to six years in prison and forced labor in the quarries of San Lázaro. The film's fiction narrates the life of Martí surrounded by family problems, economic vicissitudes, conflicts and misunderstandings. It also reflects the character's first contact with the political world and with nature; all of them elements from which his thoughts and convictions were progressively forged.
