The Hispanists' Forum is back with a new twist, Hispanism in Action. We will feature Hispanists, professionals, and experts in the teaching of Spanish, who will reflect on various topics of study in the fields of Hispanism and applied linguistics, among other aspects.
The presence of Spanish in India has experienced spectacular growth in recent decades. From being a virtually unknown language outside the realm of Hispanism, it has become a favored language: a new popular image of Spanish-language culture has been consolidated that did not previously exist. As Professor Ganguly has pointed out, throughout the second half of the 20th century, Spanish-language culture was particularly represented by figures such as Federico García Lorca and Pablo Neruda. These figures were joined, starting in the 1970s, by Latin American writers such as Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Isabel Allende, among others.
Now, with the introduction of cable television, the emergence of the internet, and the emergence of dozens of Indian and foreign channels, Spanish-language popular culture has also made a significant impact, especially through Latin music, flamenco, Spanish-language television series and films, and the new interest in sports such as soccer, creating a clearer picture of a Spanish-speaking world that plays an important role in international relations.
Hispanism in Action will take place the last week of every month, from April to October 2025, at the Zenobia – Juan Ramón Jiménez Library of the Instituto Cervantes in New Delhi, at 6:00 p.m.
