Zarzuela Viva

Zarzuela Viva Javier del Real

Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the Teatro de la Zarzuela, presents this program to promote zarzuela internationally, a genre that has been recognized as a Representative Manifestation of Intangible Cultural Heritage with the goal of achieving UNESCO’s recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. 


Curated by the Teatro de la Zarzuela, the series features some of the most notable recent productions, including  El barberillo de Lavapiés  by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, directed by Alfredo Sanzol with musical direction by José Miguel Pérez-Sierra;  La del manojo de rosas  by Pablo Sorozábal, in a historic staging by Emilio Sagi with musical direction by Guillermo García Calvo. The program also highlights the acclaimed Zarza Project, which has been successfully engaging young audiences season after season. Targeted at viewers aged 12 to 18, the productions feature young performers selected through a rigorous audition process. This year’s featured work is  El sobre verde  by Jacinto Guerrero, with musical direction by Cecilia Bercovich and stage direction by Nuria Castejón. .

The screenings will be accompanied by the documentaryTiempo de Zarzuela, directed by Cristina Otero Roth.

In addition, Spanish pianist Ramón Grau will conduct a zarzuela seminar for Filipino musicians in partnership with the Conservatory of Music of the University of Santo Tomás.
