Fuenteovejuna
Javier del RealFuenteovejuna is a play by the Spanish Golden Age poet and playwright Lope de Vega, first published in 1617. It is one of the key works of Spanish literature, with a plot that describes how a village in Andalusia during the time of the Catholic Monarchs rebels against the abuses of a nobleman, becoming a symbol of union of the people against oppression. Its adaptation to the Spanish dance became the culminating work of the choreographer Antonio Gades, creating one of the great ballets of the 20th century. A masterful blend of the cultured and the popular, in this spectacle, Gades shows what has already become his vital testament, his confidence in the richness and expressive power of Spanish dance in all its extension: the folkloric dance, stylized dance and flamenco.
