El público

El público Javier del Real

El público is the most difficult and mysterious work of one of the most versatile poets and scriptwriters of Spanish literature: Federico García Lorca.

Written in 1930, it did not premier until 56 years later, as it was considered by the author to be an unperformable work of what he called “impossible theater”. Surrealist work, later considered one of the most important plays in the history of Spanish theater, El público is a cry of defiance against bourgeois hypocrisy and a plea for freedom of love and artistic freedom.

The composer Mauricio Sotelo, winner of the National Music Award (2001), whose works have been performed by some of the most internationally renowned orchestras, has written a great number of pieces in which flamenco reaches a solid presence. This is the case of El público, which fuses opera and flamenco.

The opera also features great artists of the flamenco genre, such as the guitarist Cañizares, winner of the National Music Prize (2022) and one of the most influential artists in the world, flamenco singer Arcángel, Latin Grammy Award for Best Flamenco Album (2018); and Best Flamenco Album (2018); or the dancer Rubén Olmo, winner of the National Dance Award (2015) and current director of the National Ballet of Spain.
