Neirud

Neirud died shrouded in mystery, leaving behind no trace of her past. Confronting family secrets, the filmmaker pieces together the mysterious life of her enigmatic "aunt". In doing so, she discovers Neirud’s colourful life as a pioneering black lesbian wrestler in an all-female circus troupe through the 60s and 80s. As she investigates Neirud’s controversial ring persona, the filmmaker paints a fascinating story touching on race, identity and queer life through changing Brazilian society.

Following the screening on 13 September at Edinburgh’s Filmhouse, there will be a Q&A session with director Fernanda Faya.
