El portero [The Goalkeeper]
El portero is an unusual work within Gonzalo Suárez’s filmography. Based on a text by another author and featuring a more traditional, everyday comedic logic than his audience was accustomed to, it approaches the daily reality of a Spanish post-war village with touches of western, as contemporary critics described the film. Its two protagonists, played by Carmelo Gómez and Maribel Verdú, create a humanistic portrayal of the losers of the war. Synopsis: In 1948, Ramiro Forteza, a former football goalkeeper who once played in the first division, makes a living travelling from village to village, challenging locals to take penalty shots against him, with a few coins at stake for anyone who manages to score past him.
