In the 40th edition of the Goya Awards, the Film Academy is granting the Honorary Goya to Gonzalo Suárez, recognising the work of this unique and essential filmmaker within Spanish cinema. As a tribute, we present this film series in which four films selected by the filmmaker himself will be screened on the Instituto Cervantes’ Vimeo channel.

Gonzalo Suárez is one of the most singular and unclassifiable creators in Spanish cinema. His work moves between fantasy, metacinematic reflection and ironic humour, challenging the narrative and aesthetic conventions of contemporary film. A journalist, novelist and filmmaker, Suárez has built his own universe in which identity is fragmented, characters split in two, and reality merges with fiction in unsettling and poetic ways.

His filmography —from Ditirambo (1967) to Rowing with the Wind (1988) and beyond— demonstrates a constant commitment to exploring imagination as a creative force, refusing to submit to trends, movements or predetermined genres. His cinema is a space for play and reflection, a labyrinth of literary and cultural references where humour coexists with melancholy and critical insight is delivered with subtlety.

Recognised with distinctions such as the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, the National Cinematography Award or the Order of Alfonso X the Wise, Suárez has been celebrated both in Spain and internationally. His legacy is that of a free artist who conceived cinema as an ongoing act of invention and an exploration of the limits of perception and storytelling.
