Espagne 1936

Espagne 1936 Espagne 1936

Espagne1936 (also known as Espagne 1937 or Loyal Spain Under Arms) is a seminal documentary about the Spanish Civil War. Filmed according to a screenplay by Luis Buñuel and directed by Jean-Paul Le Chanois, the original documentary is preserved at the Filmoteca Española in versions restored by its own staff, among which the French version—34 minutes and 30 seconds long—stands out, as it compensates for the lack of the original Spanish version.

The documentary, produced by the Alliance of Anti-Fascist Intellectuals as a piece of propaganda for international distribution, depicts the conflict from the perspective of the Republican government, including footage of life on the home front and at the front lines.

At the event at the Instituto Cervantes, the French and Italian versions will be screened; the latter is 34 minutes and 5 seconds long and was originally preserved in 16mm format.

The event will be introduced by Spanish film historian Silvia Ribelles and Mexican film restorer and colorist Benjamín Fernández
