Queerolé
Cervantes Institute presents the dance short film QUEEROLÉ! about the queer history of flamenco and its relationship with masculinity. The film was directed and performed by Patricia Langa and co-produced with Courtney Nettleford after receiving a DYCP grant from the Arts Council England in 2021. In the film, we travel back in time through the gender politics of the queer history of flamenco to meet some of the people who left their mark on this form of expression. We encounter real and fictional characters who challenged or defended gender stereotypes: people who broke with the binary or reinforced it even further. Patricia guides the audience through dance, theatre, drag and music to reveal the lives of those who shaped what we now understand as this art form, one of the most honest and free expressions of the self. The screening of this film is part of the cultural programme of the Open House Festival, of which the Instituto Cervantes in London is a part.
