In the 40th edition of the Goya Awards, the Film Academy is granting the Honorary Goya to Gonzalo Suárez, in recognition of the work of this unique and essential filmmaker within Spanish cinema.
As a tribute, we present this film series in which four films selected by Suárez himself will be screened on the Instituto Cervantes’ Vimeo channel.
Gonzalo Suárez is one of the most singular and unclassifiable creators in Spanish cinema. His work moves between fantasy, metacinematic reflection, and ironic humour, challenging both narrative and aesthetic conventions in contemporary film. A journalist, novelist, and filmmaker, Suárez has built his own universe where identity is fragmented, characters split into doubles, and reality blends with fiction in an unsettling and poetic way.
His filmography—from Ditirambo (1967) to Rowing with the Wind (1988) and beyond—demonstrates his unwavering dedication to exploring imagination as a creative force, free from fashions, trends, or predefined genres. His cinema is a space for play and reflection, a labyrinth of literary and cultural references where humour coexists with melancholy and critical insight emerges with subtlety.
Awarded distinctions such as the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, the National Cinematography Award, and the Order of Alfonso X the Wise, Suárez has been celebrated both in Spain and internationally. His legacy is that of a free artist, who envisioned cinema as an ongoing act of invention and an exploration of the boundaries of perception and narrative.
