Espacios Ocupados: Queridas Viejas / Old Mitresses

Espacios Ocupados: Queridas Viejas / Old Mitresses María Gimeno

The project Queridas Viejas / Old Mitresses will be part of the art programme ‘Espacios Ocupados (Occupied Spaces)’ in London, with the performance of the same title, in collaboration with University College London.

Queridas Viejas / Old Mitresses  is a performance that rectifies the historical exclusion of women artists from dominant narratives in art history. It aims to honour the memory of women artists and give them a voice by integrating them into art history textbooks, from which they have been systematically excluded.
After a successful international tour Old Mistresses / Queridas viejas is presented for the first time in London. The performance has taken place in national museums such as the Prado in Madrid and the Cabañas in Guadalajara Mexico, cultural centres CCCB Barcelona or MUNTREF in Buenos Aires, universities, public and private institutions in Europe and Latin America.
The aim of this project is to encourage critical thinking. By uncovering hidden aspects of history and showcasing the talent of women as artists, it encourages the public to reflect on the importance of gender inequality in the arts and in society as a whole.
By celebrating and championing the achievements of women artists of the past, the performance empowers women today. Critical and humorous, the performance is accessible to all audiences.
