El portero

El portero Instituto Cervantes

The Goalkeeper is an oddity in Gonzalo Suárez’s filmography. Based on someone else’s text and featuring a more traditional, everyday comedic logic than audiences were used to in his films, it approaches the daily reality of a Spanish post‑war village with touches of a western—just as critics at the time described it. Its two protagonists, played by Carmelo Gómez and Maribel Verdú, create a humanist portrait of the losers of the war.

Synopsis. In 1948, Ramiro Forteza, a former football goalkeeper who once played in the first division, makes a living traveling from village to village, challenging the locals to take penalty shots at him, with a few coins at stake for anyone who manages to beat him. [ICAA Database]
