Joanot Martorell Conference 2025
Queen Mary University
Instituto Cervantes in London is collaborating with the Centre for Catalan Studies at Queen Mary University for the annual Joanot Martorell Conference, which will be delivered by Emeritus Professor Jacqueline Hurtley.
Her lecture, titled “Translation or Transcreation? English-language authors, Catalan translators and publishers, 1920–1938”, will focus on a selection of literary texts in English by 19th and 20th-century authors. It will reference the fiction of George Eliot, Joseph Conrad, and Virginia Woolf before turning to the translations and/or transcreative works rendered into Catalan by journalists and writers such as Josep Carner, C.A. Jordana, and Josep M. Millàs-Raurell, and marketed by cultural entrepreneurs like Carles Soldevila and Josep Janés i Olivé—both writers and occasionally journalists—during a volatile twenty-year period in Catalonia.
Finally, attention will be given to the contexts of translation and publication in order to interpret the logic behind certain transformations.
