Casilda Ybarra Satrústegui (Fundación MAPFRE), Anders Zorn y España
Anders Zorn,
Conference organised by ARTES Group for Iberian and Latin American Visual Culture and the Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art, with the support of the Instituto Cervantes.
From the very beginning of his career, Anders Zorn felt a strong attraction to Spain and its culture. Immersed in the Romantic tradition that had spread a legendary image of the country, the painter made a total of seven trips to Spain, contributing not only to the dissemination of this highly successful image abroad but also to portraying some of the most prominent members of Madrid’s society. His admiration for the great Spanish masters, especially Velázquez, and his friendship with leading artists of the time, such as Joaquín Sorolla and Ramón Casas, complete this unique vision of the artist and open new avenues for understanding and research.
Speaker: Casilda Ybarra Satrústegui holds a degree in Art History (2005) with highest honors. She earned a Master’s in Museum Studies from New York University thanks to a Fulbright scholarship. Since 2011, she has developed her professional career in the field of exhibitions at Fundación MAPFRE, where she has served as Fine Arts Curator since late 2021.
Her main areas of interest include 19th-century European and Spanish painting. She curated the exhibition Sorolla’s Summers and is currently co-curating a retrospective dedicated to Anders Zorn, organized in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Hamburg and scheduled to open at Fundación MAPFRE in February 2026. The conference will be moderated by Professor Claudia Hopkins (University of Edinburgh).
