In its annual awards ceremony, the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences concedes a special prize, the Goya de Honour, to artists whose career is of undeniable value and relevance. In the 2022 round of these awards, this recognition is going to be given to José Sacristán, one of the most prestigious, respected and beloved actors in Spanish cinema.
The Instituto Cervantes joins in this tribute from the academics with this online film series that recognises this multifaceted performer with a massive career in Spanish cinema, who has participated in more than one hundred films with a very different range and aims.
Selected by Sacristán himself, the programme introduces four works of film that draw an interest to the time in which they were made. In addition, the participation of the actor himself in them shows his alliance with cinema as a tool for social dialogue and as a reflection of his hard work alongside four generations of filmmakers with whom he has cemented his exemplary profession as a performer.
And it is that the work of José Sacristán, who throughout his career has also directed three feature films and several stage performances, which allows us to take a journey through how Spanish cinema has been responding to the demands of Spanish culture for a social and aesthetic dialogue. His unmistakable voice and his ability to embody all kinds of characters make him one of the best protagonists in the history of acting in Spain, since his presence has been a constant in cinema, theatre —also musical theatre— and television.
