Spanish cinema: Past and future

Spanish cinema: Past and future Ernesto Gómez

Spanish cinema: past and future, is a new film series that establishes a dialogue of themes and cinematographic styles between four pairs of classic and recent Spanish films, paired by specific themes. This film selection shows that not only there are similar plots but that despite the passage of time and socioeconomic evolutions in Spain, filmmakers have the same concerns today. The films and themes are:

The 'Women and empowerment', analysed through two feature films where the protagonists believe themselves to be weak but circumstances force them to realise their strength and reconsider their independence.

Disappearance as a metaphor is the theme of two thrillers that use the figure of a missing person to show the lifes of two families, broken apart and plagued by economic crisis. Both films use a police narrative that invites the viewer to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Back to square one is analysed in two films featuring women protagonists who go back home after years living in another country. A journey marked by memories and what has been important to their cultural background.

Political immaturity is explored in two satires that show the impact politics has on citizens during times of political change. A theme in which comedy is used to criticize the preconceived false ideas and political maturity of Spanish society.
