The Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences annually grants a special award, the Goya de Honor (Goya of Honour), to artists whose careers are of undeniable value and relevance. In the 2022 edition, the award reaches the hands of José Sacristán, one of the most prestigious, respected and beloved actors in Spanish cinema.
The Instituto Cervantes joins this recognition with an online film series which pays tribute to this multifaceted actor. With a long career in Spanish cinema, José Sacristán has starred in more than one hundred films of very different spectrum and intention.
Selected by Sacristán, the cycle presents four titles that draw special attention to the moment in which they were made. In addition, the participation of our honour character reveals his involvement in cinema as a tool for social dialogue and as a reflection of his hard work alongside four generations of filmmakers with whom he has consolidated his exemplary profession as an interpreter.
The work of José Sacristán, who has also directed three feature films and several stage performances, allows us to take a tour of the way in which Spanish cinema has been responding to the Spanish culture's demands for a social and aesthetic dialogue. His distinctive voice and his ability to embody all kinds of characters make him one of the main characters of the acting history in Spain. His presence has been constant in cinema, theatre - also musical theatre - and television.
