Goya en Burdeos

The figure of Francisco de Goya has been approached by different biopics highlighting the brilliance of the Spanish painter. Saura turned to the acting background of Spanish actor Paco Rabal to address the last years of the painter, exiled and deaf. Saura uses Goya’s work to illustrate his own understanding of the past of a country torn by war and political division. The photography of Vittorio Storaro, Saura's recurring collaborator, creates a visual composition in the film which dialogues explicitly with the various imaginaries of the painter. Saura will approach again this historical character in a 2022 short film entitled Goya: 3 de mayo, where he brings to life Goya’s famous homonymous canvas.
