Translator and Machine
16:15-16:30 The Bridge in Between Machines (Matías Battistón) 16:30-16:45 The Role of Technology in the Work of a Professional Translator (Carlos Teixeira) 16:45-17:15 Panel discussion chaired by Mary Phelan
The strict observation of rules, procedures, constraints and limitations has been part of literature since its beginnings. In recent years, some writers have reached out to technology and the use of digital tools to compose their works. How would one translate a text partially written by a machine? Could the translator use the same tools to recreate those works in a different language, using a machine to translate what another machine did? In between creation, translation and automatism exists an uncertain space, still to be explored.
How can technology help the translator and how does this reflect in the quality of the translated text? As well as other professionals who work in an intellectual discipline, the translator has a wide range of tools at their disposal: translation memories, machine translation, dictionaries and electronic glossaries… In this brief presentation, we will see some samples and will share some questions for debate.
