International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Beibhinn Harman. Embajada de Espala en Irlanda

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is commemorated every year on November 25 since 1999. The United Nations General Assembly chose this date in memory the three Mirabal sisters murdered on November 25, 1960 by the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. The aim of this day is to denounce, prevent and eradicate violence against women and girls around the world, calling for worldwide action to increase awareness, promote advocacy and create opportunities for discussion on challenges and solutions.

With this goal in mind, the Embassy of Spain in cooperation with the Embassies of Mexico and Brazil is organizing a seminar on November 27 at the Cervantes Institute. It will consist of a discussion with leading feminists, human rights activists, legislators, and prominent leaders in the field, an open debate with representatives of civil society women´s associations from Mexico, Brazil, and Spain based in Dublin, and finally the screening of two Mexican documentaries: Mujer de tierra (Woman of the earth), directed by Evelyn Mercedes Muñoz (2021, 15 min), and Manchester Acatitla, directed by Selma Josseline Cervantes Aguilar (2020, 10 min).
