Beti Bezperako Koplak (Couplets for an Everlasting Eve)

Beti Bezperako Koplak (Couplets for an Everlasting Eve) Kodo Atxaga Arnedo

In this short, Ageda Kopla Taldea, a group of twenty animators coordinated by Bego Vicario tell a fascinating tale based on the Basque tradition of bertsolaris (creator-performers of improvised verse), portraying the history of popular cultural traditions at a time when their purpose and contents are being redefined. This forms part of the stream of collective animation pieces developed in recent years in the University of the Basque Country, including Areka (2016) and Miraila (2017).

Synopsis: Different types of animation overlap and follow each other, creating a disquieting atmosphere while verse after verse, the voice of bertsolari Maialen Lujanbio denounces gender violence and the abuse of women. The Basque tradition of St. Agatha's Eve, when people recite verse to the rhythm of beating sticks, provides the setting for this stark social critique.
