Arturo Barea. The English Window

Arturo Barea. The English Window (c) Javier Rosa

Sixty one years after he died in exile in England, the Instituto Cervantes in Dublin pays tribute to the Spanish writer and BBC broadcaster Arturo Barea with this exhibition. On display are all Barea’s books, some letters, his typewriter and a rare interview with the author.

All but one of Barea’s books were first published in English, translated by Austrian wife, Ilsa. His best-known work is The Forging of a Rebel, an autobiographical trilogy published in the 1940s, highly praised by George Orwell, which was not published in Spanish in Spain until 1977. Barea also became well known for the over eight hundred talks he gave for the BBC’s Latin American Service. He also ran the Foreign Press Censorship Office of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War where he dealt with correspondents such as Ernest Hemingway.

William Chislett, the curator of the exhibition, will open the exhibition on 8 November.
