Third Edition Women Creating. Theatrical Concert Series for Human Rights

Third Edition Women Creating. Theatrical Concert Series for Human Rights Water People Theater

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Water People Theater, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes de Chicago, dedicates the month of March each year to creating a dynamic platform for artistic exchange, critical dialogue, and the presentation of theatrical works written by women: Mujeres Creando / Women Creating.

This signature initiative spotlights women’s enduring commitment to human rights, amplifying their voices and perspectives through the transformative power of theater. By bringing bold, resonant storytelling to the stage, Mujeres Creando fosters meaningful cultural engagement and affirms the essential role of women playwrights in shaping contemporary discourse. Mujeres Creando invites women playwrights from Latin America and Spain to submit works that explore human rights themes. In this edition, an international jury composed of distinguished artists, playwrights, scholars, and leading advocates of Hispanic theater—Egla Hassan, Sonia Chocrón, Indira Páez, Belén Galain, Neher Jacqueline Briceño, and Rebeca Alemán—has selected the award-winning works in recognition of their artistic excellence, originality, and compelling engagement with human rights.

These texts expand and strengthen the presence of women’s narratives on the contemporary stage, underscoring the power of theater written by women to confront the defining challenges of our time. The staged concert readings of the three award-winning works will be presented at the Instituto Cervantes de Chicago throughout March: on Mondays the 9th and 16th, in celebration of International Women’s Day, culminating on Friday, March 27, in honor of World Theatre Day.
