Artists Talk: Visual storytelling, from children´s books to The New Yorker
In conversation with children's books author and illustrator, José Fragoso, and Benjamin Schwartz, a cartoonist for The New Yorker, a lecturer in the University's narrative medicine program and social media content producer for the medical school's Department of Surgery.

From the books by Maurice Sendak or Dr Seuss to the covers and cartoons of The New Yorker, illustrations are with us in every stage of our life. In conversation with José Fragoso and Benjamin Schwartz, they will show us how an illustration can teach Spanish to kids, or ways to treat the patient to medical students at Columbia University NY.  

Children’s Book/Comic Illustration Workshop
Join award-winning author and illustrator José Fragoso as he reads from his new children's book “La Increíblemente Alucinante Historia de Marcial, el niño normal."

After the reading, kids will create their own artworks with José Fragoso and Benjamin Schwartz. They will learn how to draw from a published children´s book author and a cartoonist for The New Yorker.

All materials – pencils, paper, etc. will be supplied. Drop-in event for families with children ages 8-12 years old. Limit to first 15. Please RSVP at: BPT

José Fragoso (Madrid, 1975) is illustrator and story teller.
After living in Madrid and New York, he currently lives in Chicago where he works for the production company Picture Farm in Brooklyn, NY. He is also illustration teacher at Instituto Cervantes Chicago and many public schools in the city.

His work has been published at 3x3 Magazine or Creative Quarterly and he is a proud member of the Society of Illustrator of USA.

His hands are always inki and he believes in Jean Jacques Sempé, Sir Quentin Blake y Roald Dahl.

Dr. Benjamin Schwartz is a New York based cartoonist and educator. 
He has been a regularly contributing cartoonist for The New Yorker since 2012. He is also an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University, where he earned both his undergrad and medical degree. 

His academic work focuses on using visual storytelling techniques and the principles of Narrative Medicine to improve the communication skills and empathy of doctors in training, and on developing engaging educational content for the web and social media to improve health literacy within the general population.
