Song of Sand and Copper. Closing Night in Celebration of World Theatre Day
Water People Theater
Song of Sand and Copper is set in a desert in the year 2025, where two siblings—a twelve-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy—walk fleeing the drought that has wiped out their village. Along their journey, they face violence, abuse, deception, and loss, but they also discover hope and friendship.
The play is the winner of the Mujeres Creando 2026 playwriting contest, written by Spanish playwright Raquel Calonge, who combines the roles of author and stage director, and is the founder of the company La Casquería, with which she writes and directs works for both adult and young audiences.
The stage reading is directed by Rinska Carrasco, a proud Dominican-American director, nominated by the committee of Chicago’s prestigious Jeff Theatre Awards for her work both on and off the stage.
