Women, men and communication at work, lecture held on the occasion of the International Women's Day

Women, men and communication at work, lecture held on the occasion of the International Women's Day Estrella Montolío Durán

International studies show that, in public contexts and in professional settings, in particular, women and men do not communicate in the same way. Far from being differences of a biological nature, research shows that such different communication patterns are the result of a different socialization.

What happens, for example, in a mixed meeting from a communication point of view? Who takes the floor more often? Who takes the longest speaking turns? Who interrupts more frequently and who is interrupted? Whose voice is heard with respect and whose is not heard? What impact do these communication differences have on the promotion of female talent in organizations? What measures are some large companies implementing to converge towards a more effective and egalitarian communication culture?

The project «Spanish, a language with values» will be presented during the lecture. It will allow us all to reflect on these iniquitous interactions, detect other situations unnoticed until now, extend this detection to other languages and cultures and collect all this knowledge in a large collaborative database that allows us to study it in depth.

Dr. Estrella Montolío Durán is Professor of Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Barcelona and a communication consultant. She is also director of the University of Barcelona-Diputació de Barcelona Chair for clear communication applied to the Administration.

The lecture is held on the occasion of the International Women's Day.
