Writers of the twentieth century. The life and works of Juan Rulfo
Instituto Cervantes in Amman is paying tribute to one of the greatest hispanic masters of literature and narrative of the twentieth century. Mexican renowned writer, journalist and historian, Jorge F. Hernández will lecture on the life and work of this great novelist, Juan Rulfo.
Juan Rulfo (1917 – 1986). In 1934 he moved to Mexico City where he worked as an immigration agent in the Ministry of the Interior. That position allowed him to travel to different parts of the country, strengthening therefore, his love for Mexican culture and anthropology. During these trips he began to publish his stories in literary magazines.
He is acknowledged at an international level mainly for two books. One of which is El llano en llamas (1953), a collection of short stories, and the novel, Pedro Páramo (1955).
Juan Rulfo is one of the most widely read Mexican writers, both at home and abroad, being an important reference in world literature. His texts have been translated into English, French, German, Turkish, Hebrew and Arabic.
The renowned Mexican writer also showed interest in photography, being recognized as one of the masters of the twentieth-century photographers. Rulfo wrote some cinematographic scripts: Paloma Hurtado (1963) and El Gallo de Oro (1963). In 1970 he received the National Prize of Literature of Mexico, and in 1983, the Príncipe de Asturias de la Letras Prize.
