The Chess Player
Diego Padilla is a chess player who won the Spanish Championship in 1934. There, he met his wife—a French journalist with whom he moved to France a few years later. Shortly thereafter, Diego was accused of espionage by the Nazis and imprisoned in an SS facility. His only means of surviving this hostile environment lay in the passion for chess of Colonel Maier, the commanding officer. The screening of this film—winner of 16 film awards and directed by Luis Oliveros—is organized by the Resource Center of the Education Attaché’s Office at the Embassy of Spain in the U.S. and will include a discussion with producer Juan Antonio Casado.
