Why do I sing in Spanish?

Why do I sing in Spanish? Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque

The cycle Why do I sing in Spanish? a series of prerecorded online talks, in which various artists explain why they choose Spanish as a way of expressing themselves artistically. These are musicians who, due to their personal circumstances or their career, could naturally have chosen another language, but they sing in Spanish. In the first part of this cycle we invited Enrique Bunbury, Perla Batalla and Nacha Méndez to explain these reasons to us and tell us about their projects and career. It is a way of understanding why Bunbury, although he lives in the United States, maintains Spanish to compose, or why Perla Batalla or Nacha Méndez (both with English as their mother tongue) decided to do it. The first to sing Cohen in our language and compose his own songs in Spanish or Nacha Méndez, as an act of rebellion. The interviewer is the director of the Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque, Silvia Grijalba, who, before focusing on her work as a cultural manager and writer (awarded the Fernando Lara Novel Prize), was, for twenty years, responsible for the music area of the El Mundo newspaper. Regarding those years, she published in 2018 the essay "More than famous" recounting her experiences interviewing artists such as Bowie, Mick Jagger or during his tours with Héroes del Silencio, Loquillo or Depeche Mode. And she is also the author of the book “Plano Secuencia”, an atypical biography of Bunbury, in which she narrates one of her tours of the United States. The second part of this cycle will take place between September and December 2020, with artists who also explain why they sing in our language.
