Ecology and climate change
Professor Fernando Valladares of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) introduces us to the world of ecology and climate change with some videos where he addresses the new fires, the greenhouse effect and the relationship between biodiversity and pandemics. Pandemics and biodiversity Biodiversity protects us from many of these viruses and in general mitigates their possible impacts, minimizing the risk of human infection and, above all, that trigger a pandemic. Many studies support it, but... How exactly does it happen? 5 minutes with the new fires Fires result from the combination of several factors. Among them, climate change and the accumulation of fuel (dry plant material) and new social conditions play a crucial role in making them more frequent and intense. We inherited forests that are no longer in balance with the new environmental and social conditions. 5 minutes with the greenhouse effect Since the industrial revolution, the average temperature of the planet has risen 1.1 ºC. It seems very little, but actually it is a lot. In the polar regions the value exceeds 3 ºC. The most important thing is that it has happened very quickly. There is no geological record or evidence to show another rapid rise in temperature in the planet's history. If we exceed 1.5ºC and especially if we exceed 2ºC, the climate will be very different and it will be very difficult to go back.
