Dunas Spring Dance 2012 - Sydney Opera House

In Dunas, two of the most celebrated and award winning names in dance join forces in a spectacular show of flamenco, live Arabic music and haunting stagecraft. Together with internationally revered flamenco artist María Pagés, choreographer and dancer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui – known in Sydney for Sutra from Spring Dance 2010 and Babel from Sydney Festival 2012– has taken Dunas around the world, his Moroccan-Belgian heritage providing inspiration for the production’s overarching theme of cultural fusion. With musicians playing a live, original score by Szymon Brzoska and Rubén Lebaniegos, Dunas draws the audience into the imagery of endlessly shifting sand dunes, represented by billowing fabrics on stage – an ethereal backdrop to Pagés’ fiercely passionate flamenco and Cherkaoui’s more fluid, free-styling modern dance.

Dunas is part of Spring Dance 2012, curated by Rafael Bonachela
