Rendezvous with Cinema: «The Executioner»
Instituto Cervantes
The virtual film club Rendezvous with Cinem closes its 2025 programming with one of the masterpieces of classic Spanish cinema, The Executioner, directed by award-winning director Luis García Berlanga.
In this 1963 black comedy, Berlanga challenges Francoist society with his typical irony, criticising situations of the time with a touch of humour.
Synopsis
José Luis is a young employee in a funeral home who, while doing service in a prison, meets an executioner named Amadeo, who is about to retire. When he brings him the briefcase containing his professional instruments that he had forgotten at home, he also meets his daughter Carmen, whom no one has wanted to marry because she is not related to her father. The couple quickly hit it off and, after being caught by the old man in a compromising situation with his daughter, José Luis is forced to marry her. [Source: Catalogue of Berlanga, la risa amarga]
