The second session of «Cita con el cine» is dedicated to Amanece, que no es poco, by José Luis Cuerda.
This film became, almost from the moment of its release, a contemporary classic. Preceded by the short film Total (1983), also by José Luis Cuerda, it stands as a perfect example of Spanish surrealist comedy. The success of its world led its director to make two further films in the same genre: Así en el cielo como en la tierra (1995) and Tiempo después (2018), his final film.
The post-screening discussion will be moderated by Pablo Adiego.
Synopsis
Teodoro is a Spanish engineer and professor at the University of Oklahoma who returns to Spain to enjoy a sabbatical year. On arriving, he learns that his father has killed his mother and, to make it up to him for the loss, has bought a motorcycle with a sidecar so they can travel together. This is how they end up in a remote mountain village that appears deserted — it turns out all the locals are at church, because Mass is quite a spectacle. Father and son attend the annual elections to appoint a mayor, a priest, a teacher and a prostitute. Meanwhile, the village has also been descended upon by a group of students from an American university, some Belgian meteorologists, a faction of defectors from the Red Army Choir, and even camouflaged invaders from a neighbouring village.
