Benengeli 2023. International Week of Literature in Spanish

Benengeli 2023. International Week of Literature in Spanish Calamar Diseño y Edición

Although it is assumed that modern narrative emerged as the story of characters who were unaware of heroism and who felt distant from the incarnation of the virtues of a people, the variety of narrative proposals in Spanish also seems to make occasional winks to certain aspects of the literary tradition.

From there the clarity of an essential question prevails. Is there a novel, a short story, in which reflections of what was the old epic can be glimpsed? What about poetry?

From an ironic vision, from a possible rewriting, from a nostalgia and an unfulfilled need to tell stories that found and explain a collective reality marked by the heroes, can it be said that some current voices try to redefine the status of the epic against to prosaic reality?

The epic, as a rejection, as a longing, as a reworking or misunderstanding, as a necessity, is the intuited shadow within a significant number of current literary fictions in our language, so this new encounter aims to discover the way in which a significant number of authors face, evade or move away from this expressive possibility that television or cinematographic fiction, video games and sports reports seem to face more clearly.

More than sixty authors from Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Equatorial Guinea, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela will dialogue with writers from Australia, Belgium, Morocco and the United Kingdom United with the intention of calibrating whether the epic is just nostalgia or evidence of a metamorphosis with aesthetic consequences.

Benengeli 2023, the only literary festival in Spanish that spans and spans the five continents, returns to the road to shed light on this question, around which Jorge Luis Borges expressed a curious prediction at the end of the sixties: « since the future contains many things—perhaps the future contains all things—I think the epic will come back to us.”
