11th International Conference on the Links Between Spain and North America

11th International Conference on the Links Between Spain and North America Instituto Franklin

In April 2026, the 11th International Congress on the Links between Spain and North America will take place, organized by the Franklin Institute at the University of Alcalá, the City College of New York, and the Instituto Cervantes New York, with the participation of the director of the latter.

Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, the congress will examine from a multidisciplinary perspective Spain’s profound—though often underrecognized—role in the American independence process, including the campaigns of Bernardo de Gálvez, the actions of the Spanish fleet, the opening of strategic fronts, and the defense of key territories.

The event will address the historical and contemporary relationship between both countries, with particular emphasis on the Atlantic perspective, historical contacts during the War of Independence, and the shared challenges they face today.
