An Impassive Sky is an exercise in historical memory directed by filmmaker David Varela and featuring a group of young people who discuss—based on real witness testimonies—the events that took place during a scorching July of 1937 in the Battle of Brunete, near Madrid.
Synopsis: Brunete, in the western area of Madrid, was the site of one of the bloodiest and most lethal battles of the Spanish Civil War. A group of teenagers investigates, recites, and debates the testimonies of the soldiers who fought in that terrible battle. In doing so, they make the experiences of veterans and the dead their own. Meanwhile, the film evolves, adapts, and takes shape through the gaze of a new generation that is open to dialogue and critically reexamines the teaching and historical memory of a country in permanent polarization.
