Tribute to José García-Mazás

Professor José García-Mazás, was such a man, pure of mund and heart like Don Quijote, with the strengh of spirit and determination of a Gladiator. His life story reads as those of gret novels. Born of Galician parents who emigrated to Cuba, he was sent to boarding school in Spain at age 11; barely escaping from Spain with his bride in the middle of the Spanish Civil War; his extraordinary university career at Columbia, NYU and Professor Emeritus at CUNY.

He was a pioneer of Spanish/Hispanic doctorate program; a historian: author, a dedicated family man who sill had the energy and determination to help put Spain and Hispanics in their proper place within American society. His most important chapter was his very close relationship with the great Hispanist and founder of THE HISPANIC SOCIETY, Archer Milton Huntington and his sculptress wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington. Together they embarked on numerous projects in Spain, the U.S. and Latin America such as monuments of The Torch Bearers in Madrid and the monument to Jose Marti, at Central Park South, New York.

Pofessor José García-Mazás was awared Spain's highest civilian award, the medal of Isabel La Católica.

In this act after the presentation attendees will be able to watch a half-hour video about his life. A dialogue and reflections between the participants will then take place.
