Mario Vargas Llosa’s Harsh Times

Offered through the Cátedra Mario Vargas Llosa and the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at The City College, CUNY, with the cooperation of the Instituto Cervantes, thisseminar focuses on Mario Vargas Llosa’s novel Tiempos recios / Harsh Times (2019).

This year the Seminar will be conducted by Professor and Chair Angel Estévez. Participants may read the novel in either English or Spanish but knowledge of Spanish is highly desired. The first two sessions of the seminar will explore the narrative structure of the novel and the intricacies of the plot, highlighting the participation of US officials/CIA on Guatemalan politics of the 1950’s. On the third day (Oct. 28th) the session will take place at Instituto Cervantes (NY) and, in addition to the regular class discussion, the seminar will conclude with a colloquium with professors Claudia Salazar Jiménez, Jaime Manrique, and Angel Estévez. Prof. Carlos Riobó will moderate the panel.

This portion of the seminar is intended to zoom in on aspects of Harsh Times such as themes, structure, literary resources, and other aspects of the vast narrative production of this Nobel Prize winner.
