Landscape and Silencios
Created by the renowned duo Estévez y Paños, this program explores the encounter between flamenco and the avant-garde. Landscape, performed by Rafael Estévez and Yoel Vargas, draws on the fierce zapateado of Carmen Amaya and the experimental percussion of John Cage, imagining a meeting of their worlds in 1940s New York. Silencios, performed by Rafael Estévez & Valeriano Paños, is inspired by Vicente Escudero and a text from Cage’s A Year from Monday. Cage’s book reflects on silence, chance, and attentive listening, and the piece explores these ideas through stillness, movement, and the dialogue between the two performers. After the performance, Rafael Estévez & Valeriano Paños will join the audience for a conversation about how Carmen Amaya and Vicente Escudero influenced flamenco and how their time in New York helped shape its evolution.
