North por Noroeste
In the northwestern corner of Spain white grapes like Albariño and Godello shine. But since the late 1990s, the rediscovery of the old Mencía vines has enticed star winemakers such as Alvaro Palacios, Mariano García and Raúl Pérez, who soon put on the world wine map the remote and mountainous Bierzo area and the scenic region of Ribeira Sacra along the Sil River. Their top wines, with distinctive minerality and untapped potential, have gone in just a decade from being almost unknown to producing unique reds that have even elicited comparisons with Guigal’s famous Cote Rôties. They have also added diversity to Spain’s wine landscape, uncovered the potential of old and forgotten varieties, and captivated demanding American critics. This seminar is devoted to the distinctive wines of the northwestern corner of Spain, some of which have achieved cult status in record time and are available only in minuscule quantities.
